How did the Golden Boat
become the Boutique Hotel?

Then and now
The fate of the hotel building is closely intertwined with the troubled history of Pécs. Its walls date back to the middle ages and are depicted on the oldest maps. It is probably the oldest still-active hotel in Hungary, which already operated in the 1700s after the end of the Ottoman rule.
The name “Golden Boat”, mentioned in a document dating back to 1802, was probably given to the hotel because Croatian merchants from the Adriatic preferred to stay here.
The building has seen many owners, lessees and renovations over the past 200 years and has been one of the city’s most well-known institutions. In 1902, Archduke Divisional Commander Leopold Salvator rested here when he landed near Pécs after arriving by airship from Vienna.
After World War II, it was nationalised and lost its hospitality and catering function and was used partly as offices and apartments. The rear part of the building even housed shoe manufacturing.
The building, which had become the city’s property when communism ended in Hungary, was operated by a lessee under the name of the Golden Boat Inn from 1997 and then returned to private ownership in 2017.
Today, as a result of a complete renovation, it has been renewed and regained its former mission. It has once again become one of the crown jewels of Pécs.
